ColorWiz Series 4 FAQ
Can I plug a USB cable into the ColorWiz’s external USB drive port and connect to a computer?
No, the external USB drive allows you to access all data that you have saved onto the ColorWiz’s tablet. This includes spectral data, screenshots, PDF reports and more.
Can I use a regular computer running SpectraWiz or any other program with my ColorWiz Series 4 device?
Series 4 : No. The Series 4 StellarRAD is a stand-alone instrument. It is compatible with our other accessories, but it cannot be used with a PC.
Series 3: Yes, you can use VirtualHere, a USB-over-IP utility, to access the ColorWiz. You can download VirtualHere Download VirtualHere Win64 or other versions at https://virtualhere.com. Use your regular computer’s WiFi to login to the ColorWiz’s access point and launch virtual here. Don’t forget you must install SpectraWiz and related drivers on your computer in order for the computer to recognize the device. You will be able to run SpectraWiz and any customizable Windows program as if you had the device connected directly to your USB port!
Sometimes it takes a minute or so to establish WiFi connection. Is this normal?
The ColorWiz Series 3 consists of an Android tablet and also a spectrometer server (right side power button). The spectrometer server must power up for about 1 minute before spectral data can stream to the Android tablet. The spectrometer server requires minimum power to operate and can be left on during and in between measurements so the system WiFi connection doesn’t have to be continually established.
The ColorWiz Series 4 does not rely on WiFi for communication between the spectrometer and tablet – no need to wait to connect!
How can I get the newest version of the ColorWiz Pro Software?
We are continually updating our Pro software options for our handheld systems. Visit the Google Play store for the most recent versions and download and install directly on your ColorWiz device. Go to ColorWiz Pro Version 3.4
ColorWiz Software Interface

Color Measurements of Fruit
The ColorWiz App makes real-time color measurements quick and easy. Acquire full spectrum analysis and research-grade colorimetry of solids, liquids, and powder samples! This intuitive app lets users capture basic and more advanced color measurement parameters such as CIE L*a*b* and RGB. Also included are a variety of colorimetric analyses such as Chroma, Hue, Luminosity, SRM, Lovibond, and EBC. Easily save a dE color reference and calculate color differences. Save spectra, color metrics, and export as .TRM or .ABS text data files, screenshots, and/or PDF reports.
Paint Color Matching with the ColorWiz Handheld Colorimeter
Have you ever found the absolute perfect paint color just to learn your local painters use a different vendor? Many paint vendors offer paint matching services; but be careful! We have tested several of our favorite shades just to learn that the paint colors are off by a delta E of 6 or more! We compared both Behr and Sherwin Williams versions of White Dove and Soft Cloud. Check out the results! Upgrade your ColorWiz Pro App to include paint color matching libraries for Behr, Sherwin Williams, Benjamin Moore, and Valspar.
ColorWiz Applications – Food & Beverage, Agriculture, Automotive, & Paints
Color plays a vitally important role in the world in which we live. Color can sway thinking, change actions, and cause reactions. This is true for humans and animals alike. It can tell us about the chemistry of things and also predict physical properties. Accurate and consistent color measurement is extremely important across many fields of research and in a variety of industrial applications.
Delta E Color Difference for Quality Control –
Anodized Gold Metal Parts
We manufacture many of our products with vibrantly colored anodized metal enclosures. Our light sources are bright gold and all incoming parts are tested to meet our color standard. With this quality control process, all of our light sources will always have the same golden color. We use the ColorWIZ to measure the perfect gold sample. Then we can record its CIE L*a*b* color values and load the saved sample as a reference (2 software clicks!). Now every incoming sample can be tested against it and we can calculate the delta E color difference value (dE) for each new test sample. Typically a dE greater than 3 is considered a different color. dEs less than 6 are indistinguishable to the human eye and dEs larger than 10 are normally rejected as a faulty batch. In this example, you can see a passing sample with dE= 0.95 and also rejected panels measuring 10.35 and 13.01.
Take Control of Color Matching
The ColorWIZ allows you to take control of color matching. Using the RGB color swatch you can easily verify the color you are measuring and use the values to choose a matching color. Visit Easy RGB and input your measured values to find the closest commercially available paint color!
ColorWiz Accessories
ColorWIZ Handheld Colorimeter can be connected to a R600-8-VisNIR reflectance probe to measure smaller samples such as a chili pepper or test a “hard to reach” location. Additionally, you can add the probe lens, 45 degree tip holder, or just about any other reflectance accessory for more repeatability and measurement function. You can also measure liquid samples with a DP400-VISNIR Transmission Dip Probe.
